It appears we see differing truths twisted and filtered within the tribal mentality. I have some of those tendencies, but as an independent voter within a two-party system, I try to walk the line. Recently, I’ve taken a big step back to pause on matters at hand. What do I see? I see there is an overreach of presidential powers currently being implemented.

Our well-established laws to protect how Congress spends our tax dollars is under threat. Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, agrees this is an overreach of power. Her responsibility to serve Mainers is being compromised right now.

Our elected Congress members determine how our tax dollars are spent. Currently our hard-earned tax dollars are not being fully released as intended. But maybe worse, this presidential power grab takes away one of the most vital three branches of government’s congressional powers. Our congressional branch helps to balance government to protect us from ever becoming a monarchy. So now where are we heading?

I believe this is a moment to be concerned for our democracy. And as long as we keep fighting among ourselves we will not see the light of democracy under threat. So is our democracy important enough to come together? Or is this tribal mentality so ingrained in our DNA we can’t break free?

We are all Americans first, so let’s take an honest look within ourselves to see this “winning,” tribal mentality that contributes to our own political ideology. After all, none of us will win if our democracy is gone. This is my hope and prayer because with all of us, we can continue shining our light for American democracy.
