Relentless cruelty. This appears to be the foundational principle of the Trump/Musk regime.
Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid (Maine Care) are potentially on the chopping block. Why? President Donald Trump and Elon Musk say they want to cut programs to save money. Did they say they want to “‘balance the federal budget” or “lower the federal deficit?”
Don’t believe them. The money robbed from hard-working Americans, even those who voted for Trump, will help fund the tax cuts Trump promised the wealthiest Americans. Do billionaires really need more money?
If we raised taxes on the richest Americans, we could fund these programs and others we all count on, like National Institutes of Health grants to Jackson Lab and the MDI Biological Laboratory, Acadia National Park rangers and staff, SNAP, education grants to our schools, National Weather Service forecasters, air traffic controllers, the postal service, community colleges, the University of Maine System, the list goes.
Their goal appears to be to scare us and to make our lives harder. Believe me, they do not have our backs.
