I was stunned when I first learned of an esteemed Maine state representative playing dirty to further her agenda, regardless of the consequences. Outing a transgender high school student was beyond low. That student is a child. A child with a future that was going to be difficult at best but now includes unimaginable heartache and hardship.
Laurel Libby had the platform to educate the public about a very misunderstood physiologic mishap that occurs during certain stages in fetal development. Instead, she has destroyed the dignity of a child who has done nothing wrong. I believe she chose hate and discontent, disrespect and humiliation for this innocent underage human being. She can have her opinions all she wants, but children should be off limits to her and her pulpit.
I’m assuming she’s done no research on transgender anything because she would have learned that when male-to-female transgender people start hormone therapy they become less male, including less muscle density due to less testosterone (the “male” hormone).
In Libby’s case of outing this student by name and photo, the ends do not justify the means. This could and should have been handled differently.
