May 1 is international workers’ day, a day dedicated to the world’s workers. American workers, particularly those formerly working for the federal government, are having a rough time.

May day is also the international distress call that we’ve often seen dramatized.

Solidarity is a theme of May Day. It is also the name of the Polish labor union and social movement that, in the 1980s, became an early force leading to the weakening and ultimate dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Forty years ago, Solidarity rose against the Soviet boot on the Polish worker’s neck, and it had the support of the Ronald Reagan administration.

How ironic that today it is the boot of the Trump/Musk administration on the neck of so many American workers.

So on May Day let’s express our solidarity with the distressed American workers and all Americans who are distressed and dismayed by the authoritarian antics of President Donald Trump and his minions. If there is a demonstration in your area, attend it. Speak out and speak up in solidarity with your neighbors.
