Letter: No matter who you voted for, speak up for America

It no longer matters if we voted for Donald Trump or Kamala Harris back in November. It doesn’t matter which flags flew from our porches, or what bumper stickers our cars still brandish.

What matters now is that all of us across the political spectrum should expect a government that serves every American — respectfully, equally, effectively. What we are witnessing instead is the undermining of this expectation by a hungry tsunami of autocratic destruction. Not a scalpel. A tsunami.

Veterans, good luck with your medical appointments, your counseling, your prescription coverage.

Fishermen, farmers, utility companies, residents of Tornado Alley, here’s hoping you can read the skies now; you’re on your own for weather.

Retirees, Medicare recipients, guess what? No one has your back.

Parents, farmers, school nutrition specialists, no more partnerships for fresh produce in your neighborhood school.

Cancer patients and other Americans suffering from chronic illness, guess who is not conducting research on your behalf anymore?

Americans might hope that each citizen’s history will be recorded and celebrated in our national records, our monuments and our archives. The Navajo Code Talkers, the Tuskegee Airmen, the gay senator, the women on the front lines in battle. Not so much, pals.

Before our entire country is dismantled and reclaimed for the white, the male, and the wealthy; before our elected representatives and courts are further neutered and disempowered; before our world-class tradition of journalism craters even further: Speak up and speak out. This is not normal. Our party affiliations amount to nothing in the face of this.
