Donald Trump’s return to power provides what I see as a distinctive model of character and leadership for America’s youth to emulate. The core tenet is to always put your personal interests above all others. Nothing matters more than getting what you want.
Every interaction is a competition. At all costs, “win” at everything you do because ” losing” is unbearably humiliating.
If there is a chance of losing, blame others and create a story that makes it a win or claims you were cheated. Never deviate from that story and punish anyone who would challenge it.
Use threats and intimidation to control anyone who would challenge you. When they are cowed, you win when they lose their self-esteem and moral compass.
Empathy and any kind of service are for suckers and losers because they strengthen others and put you at a competitive disadvantage.
If you feel overshadowed by people respected and admired for their character and accomplishments, belittle them to diminish their glory so you look good by comparison.
This is the model of leadership I fear is now offered for young people to pursue. Making America great again means that what was virtue is now weakness and what was vice — and vicious — is now virtue. Honesty, compassion and courage, and concern for community and democracy, are for losers.
I believe that if the Trump model prevails, the next generations will truly be lost. It is time for all who are alarmed by the new “morality” to speak out, loudly and regularly.
