On behalf of Maine Sea Grant and the countless communities, small businesses, fishermen, sea farmers and students we serve, we are deeply grateful to U.S. Sen. Susan Collins for championing the future of our program.

For more than five decades, Maine Sea Grant has strengthened Maine’s coastal communities and blue economy, generating a $15 return in our state for every federal dollar invested.

When the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration terminated that funding to the University of Maine that has sustained our work since 1971, it put at risk essential coastal workforce and business development, hands-on marine science education, research with governmental, industry and local partners to inform lobster and other fisheries management, and storm preparedness technical assistance.

Because of Collins’ unwavering leadership and the support of more than 3,400 Mainers who shared their important stories about our partnership and impact, the Commerce Department has now fully restored our funding.

Thank you Sen. Collins and the people of this state for your relentless advocacy and your recognition of the value Maine Sea Grant brings to our state. Because of you and with you, we can continue the science and outreach necessary for our resilient and thriving coast.

Gayle Zydlewski

Maine Sea Grant director
