As a lifelong Mainer and proud believer in American democracy, I am urging both Sen. Susan Collins and Sen. Angus King to vote no on the so-called Big Beautiful Bill when it comes before the Senate.
This bill proposes massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, while adding trillions to our national deficit. It’s not fiscal conservatism; it’s economic sabotage. Working families across Maine are already stretched thin. This legislation would deepen inequality and force future generations to carry the burden of billionaire giveaways.
More alarming still is Section 70302, which would undermine judicial independence and could shield Donald Trump — or any president — from legal consequences. This provision is a direct attack on the separation of powers and a betrayal of our Constitution.
King has often stood up for rule of law and democratic norms. We trust that he will do so again. But I believe silence from any member of the Senate at this moment is complicity and that Collins’ past statements in support of checks and balances demand action — not words — now.
The people of Maine are watching. We need courage, not complicity. Please do not fail us.
