The bill in the Maine Legislature requiring U.S. Senate vacancies to be filled by someone from the same party as the predecessor is, in my opinion, a bad idea.

In a perfect world, a governor who is forced to pick a senator to replace one to fill a vacancy and the governor must choose a person from the same party as the vacating senator, would choose the most competent person from the opposing party to fill the vacancy. But we don’t live there. Would the governor be likely to play politics and pick a person who is likely to fail at the job and then be easy to defeat in the next election cycle?

Let’s get the most qualified people into the U.S. Senate and not more like Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville or people like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
